Rite Aid has disclosed two more massive rounds of store closures, with hundreds of additional locations to be shuttered across multiple states. Unfortunately, the closures are just the latest wave for the bankrupt drugstore chain. Heres what you need to know about the most recent round of Rite Aid closures and why the stores are going away. Why is Rite Aid closing stores? In May, the pharmacy chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, its second bankruptcy in just two years. The aim of its earlier bankruptcywhich happened in 2023was to give Rite Aid the means to turn its struggling business around, but that did not happen. Throughout 2024 and into 2025, the pharmacy chain continued to face numerous challenges. Many big-name pharmacies have struggled in recent years for numerous reasons. Drugstore chains face many of the same problems that other retail chains face, including weakening consumer confidence, which leads to people cutting back on their discretionary spending. This weakening consumer confidence started with the rising costs of inflation in the last few years and has only deteriorated further as fears arose of a potential recession stemming from President Trumps tariff wars. However, pharmacy chains in particular are also facing other problems, including increased online competition from sites like Amazon, which now sells prescriptions. Additionally, pharmacies have seen reduced profits from prescription drugs, lately due to lower reimbursement rates. Rite Aid also cited other factors, including inventory challenges and strained vendor relations in its bankruptcy filing. All of these elements have contributed to Rite Aid determining that a second bankruptcy was necessary. The company has been selling off its assets as it prepares to wind down operations for good. Which Rite Aid stores are the latest to close in June? On June 6 and again on June 13, Rite Aid filed court documents disclosing its latest wave of store closures. Those closures include 207 additional stores in the June 6 wave and 125 additional stores in the June 13 wave, for a total of 332 locations. The closures in these two waves affect stores in 14 states, with California, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire being hit the hardest. California alone is home to more than 130 of the locations. Rite Aid has now disclosed the closure of more than 800 stores across eight waves since the beginning of May. Between May 5 and May 30, Rite Aid announced the closure of 472 locations across five waves. In June, Rite Aid has so far announced an additional three waves of closures. This means that with Junes latest closures, Rite Aid has now confirmed the closure of 829 stores since May: May 5: 47 initial locations May 9: 68 additional locations May 16: 95 additional locations May 23: 151 additional locations May 30: 111 additional locations June 5: 25 additional locations June 6: 207 additional locations (listed above) June 13: 125 additional locations (listed above) How many more Rite Aid stores will close? When Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy in May, the chain had around 1,277 pharmacies in operation. The majority of those pharmacies are expected to close. Indeed, with June’s latest rounds of closings, Rite Aid has now announced the closure of 829 storesapproximately 64% of its locations. However, some locations have gotten a reprieve. As Fast Company previously reported, competitor CVS agreed in May to take over 64 physical Rite Aid locations. As for the remaining locations, they will all either close or be sold to another company by the time the process is finished, as Rite Aid is winding down its operations. Companies looking to bid on its remaining assets have until Wednesday to do so. An auction will be held on June 24 if one is needed. What happens to peoples prescriptions? The closure of Rite Aid doesnt just represent a challenge for the companys creditors and employees. It could also leave many of its customers scrambling to find new pharmacies to fill their prescriptions. However, some of Rite Aids competitors have announced they will be buying most of Rite Aid’s prescription files. Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have invited celebrity friends like fellow space traveler Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, and Ivanka Trump for their Venice nuptials later this month, but the couple hopes to put a spotlight on Venice’s traditions during the celebrations.They are sourcing some 80% of their wedding provisions from Venetian vendors, according to people close to the couple, as a way to share their appreciation for the romantic lagoon city. The wedding will take place over three days in late June, with events for the some 200 invited guests kept private.Two historic Venetian companies will add artisanal touches to the celebration: Rosa Salva, the city’s oldest pastry maker that has been crafting donut-shaped fishermen’s biscuits since 1876, and Laguna B, a design studio known for its distinctive handblown Murano glass prized by fashion and design clients. Treats good for fishermen and VIPs alike Antonio Rosa Salva, the 6th generation in his family to run the business, said the wedding order of a selection of surprises for goody bags was important recognition of his family’s long tradition of baking Venetian specialties dating back nearly 150 years.They include the bussola buttery biscuit that was long a fisherman’s staple, and small zaletti cookies, made from the Veneto region’s corn meal, flavored with raisins and lemon zest.“We try to maintain the old recipes,” said Rosa Salva, whose family business includes a catering service and four locations in Venice’s historic center and one on the mainland. “We do everything with love. It’s a pleasure and a privilege.”Rosa Salva, whose business regularly caters large events for 1,000 or more people in Venice, is perplexed by posters that have gone up around the historic center protesting the use of the city as a venue for the Bezos-Sanchez wedding.“Events like this bring quality tourism to Venice,” he said. “I don’t see how an event with 200 people can create disruptions. It’s responsible tourism. It’s prestigious that a couple like this, who can go anywhere in the world, are getting married in the city.” Collectible glassware with social responsibility Laguna B was founded by Marie Brandolini, who became known as the glass countess, in 1994, and the company is now being guided by her son, Marcantonio Brandolini, from the family’s palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal.The younger Brandolini said his vision is to restore the Venetian tradition of running creative enterprises out of Venice’s grand palazzi, which historically dedicated the ground floor to work spaces for the merchant nobility. His is a good example. The company employs 14 people under 30 out of offices in the courtyard and a boutique in an adjacent alleyway, in a sector, he underlined, “not related to tourism.”His upstairs neighbors are Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Dillerclose friends of Bezos and Sanchez, but he doesn’t think that is why the wedding planner picked his company, which is well known among a small network of collectors.Laguna B won’t disclose what its master glassblowers on Murano have created for the wedding, but the company is known for distinctive glassware that at times feature an undulating lipno two alike.“I hope they like what we did for them,” Brandolini said. “For us, it’s a great opportunity, it gives extra support for our growth.”While the business thrives on such important orders, Brandolini said he is equally gratified by young, discerning customers who seek out the shop because they admire Laguna B’s commitment to community building, reviving Venice’s artisanal heritage and projects to help protect the fragile lagoon. They might buy just a single drinking glass.His is a message of inclusivity, which he also applies to the Bezos-Sanchez choice of wedding venue. “The world is for everybody. Whoever wants to do something, should be able to do it, following the law,” he said. Venice protests Unsurprisingly in a city whose future is fiercely debated at every turn, the wedding has attracted the attention of protesters, who on Thursday hung a banner on St. Mark’s bell tower with Bezos’ name crossed out. They cite the risk of disruptions in a city so overrun with mass tourism that officials are for a second year requiring day-trippers to pay a tax to enter on key summer days.City officials have pledged that services will function normally during the wedding, and issued a denial in late March to reports that the wedding organizers had booked half the city’s water taxis and blocked out rooms at luxury hotels.“We are very proud,” Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told the Associated Press this week in St. Mark’s Square, saying he hoped he would get the chance to meet Bezos. “I don’t know if I will have time, or if he will, to meet and shake hands, but it’s an honor that they chose Venice. Brussels negotiators hope that offering to accept U.S. tariffs of 10% across all of the European Union’s exports into the United States will avert any higher duties on cars, drugs and electronics, newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Monday. Citing high-ranking EU negotiators, the paper said the offer to U.S. counterparts would come only under certain conditions and would not be billed as permanent. Handelsblatt also said the EU was, in return, ready to cut its tariffs on U.S.-made vehicles, and to possibly change technical or legal hurdles to make it easier for U.S. manufacturers to sell their cars in Europe. The EU has also offered to completely ban purchases of Russian natural gas, potentially creating more demand for U.S. producers. The EU commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The EU’s position comes partly from the realization that U.S. President Donald Trump will rely on some tariff revenues to fund planned tax cuts.
